Van Gogh Museum Rules

No photography, no large bags, airport-style security at the door — the rules are stricter than at most museums for good reason. What to know before you go so nothing slows you down.

The Van Gogh Museum has stricter rules than most museums because Vincent's paintings are extremely sensitive to light, vibration and humidity. The two surprises for first-time visitors are no photography in the permanent collection and no bags larger than A4. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related info.

Key rules to know

A short list — the rest is normal museum etiquette

📷

No photography

Photos and video are not allowed in the permanent collection — flash and sustained exposure damage Vincent's pigments. Pencil sketching is welcome and even encouraged.

🎒

Bag size limit

Anything larger than A4 (roughly 21×30 cm) must be checked at the cloakroom. Backpacks, large totes, umbrellas and tripods all go in lockers — no exceptions in the galleries.

🔍

Security check

Airport-style security at the entrance with metal detectors and bag screening. Allow 5–10 extra minutes during peak hours, more during school holidays.

🚫

No food or drink

Eating and drinking are limited to the Le Tambourin café. Water bottles must stay in your bag for the duration of the visit.

Rules & Regulations FAQ

Common questions about what's allowed

Why is photography forbidden?
Van Gogh's pigments — especially the chrome yellows and reds — are extremely sensitive to camera flashes and prolonged direct exposure. The blanket ban also keeps the galleries flowing smoothly without people stopping to set up shots.
Are sketchbooks allowed?
Yes — pencil sketching is welcome and the museum even runs occasional sketching workshops. No pens, paint, ink or pastels in the galleries.
What size bag is allowed inside?
Up to A4 size (roughly 21×30 cm). Larger bags must be checked in the free cloakroom — there are no exceptions, even for small backpacks.
Are tripods or selfie sticks permitted?
No — neither is allowed inside the museum at any time. Both must stay in the cloakroom.
Can I bring a baby carrier or stroller?
Baby carriers are welcome throughout. Strollers should be left at the cloakroom; small fold-up strollers are fine in the galleries on quiet days but staff may ask you to fold them when crowds build.
Is the museum quiet inside?
Voices are encouraged to stay low. Phone calls are not permitted inside the galleries — step back to the Entrance Hall if you need to take a call.
Can I bring food?
No food or drink is permitted in the galleries. Le Tambourin café on the ground floor is open all day for sit-down breaks.
Is there a dress code?
No dress code — wear what you're comfortable in. The galleries are climate-controlled at a steady 20°C year-round, so layers help in summer and winter alike.
